Meet the Designer: Maya Fisher-Lopez

Maya Fisher-Lopez is one of the Junior Designers at UW Home, where she supports the team in creating designs for our portfolio of brands. Maya's strengths lie in the intricate and often quirky details in her work, bringing a unique vision and fresh ideas to the Design Team, which she explained to us herself ahead of the new season...

How long have you been at UW Home?

I’ve been part of the UW Home team for nearly two years now, and I’ve really enjoyed growing and developing my creative practice within the design industry. It’s been a great opportunity to learn, experiment, and build confidence in my work, while being part of a supportive team that I’ve learned a lot from.

What does your design process look like?

My process usually begins with research and creating mood boards, alongside comp shopping to explore what’s currently on the market and keeping an eye on trends across social media and other platforms. From there, I move into sketching and refining individual elements – sometimes through painting or fine liner work, among other techniques – before pulling everything together in Photoshop and separating the designs on AVA ready for printing.

What are your favourite mediums?

I love working across watercolour, fine liners, and Procreate on my iPad, blending traditional and digital techniques together to bring ideas to life.

What are some trends you're loving lately?

My favourite colour combos at the moment are baby blue and butter yellow, and powder blue paired with dark cocoa – I love how the softer tones pop against deeper, richer shades. I’ve also been really into polka dots lately, I love everything polka dot!

I’m always on the lookout for new inspiration and ways to keep developing my ideas as I grow as a designer.

What was your favourite design to work on this season?

I really enjoyed working on Woodland Toile, which featured animals dressed in clothing and playing cards. I used fine liners of different thicknesses throughout, which helped build depth and bring more detail to each character.

I love adding quirky, unexpected elements to my work, and this piece was a fun way to give a traditional toile style a more modern twist, especially as I brought all the little character details together and watched the scene come to life.
