Meet the Designer: Jen Byrne

Jen Byrne is UW Home's brilliant Design Lead, creating and developing artwork for our portfolio of brands, and shaping the visual direction of each brand's identity. Known for an expressive use of colour, masterful watercolours and her fun-loving personality, we caught up with Jen ahead of the AW26 season to find out how she brings these designs to life.

How long have you been at UW Home?

I have worked at UW Home for 26 years. I came straight from university as a 22 year old graduate and have been here ever since!

What are you inspired by?

I'm inspired by lots of things really, I have a passion for colour and bold pattern, and I am not afraid to use colour in a big way. Colour is a tool to express yourself and create identity.

What does your design process look like?

Initially I start off looking at trends, this then evolves into ideas. In a digital world I still like to start a design off on paper and create from there, as I feel this gives me the best start and technique. I then scan in the artwork and take it from there onto the computer, manipulating the artwork in Photoshop and the design evolves from there.

What are your favourite mediums?

I like using all mediums – each medium creates a different mood. If I want to create a soft design, I like to use watercolour or pencil. For anything bold I use acrylics or gouache. Each is manipulated in different ways to create.

What are some trends you're loving lately?

I love colour clashing, bold colours, simple stripes but in high energy colours – anything that excites the eye. Colour really uplifts me.

Tell us a little more about you.

I'm a fun person, I like to have a good time and not take things too seriously. I'm usually the life and soul of any party. Love a good fancy dress... It's all or nothing with me. In general I like to live a fun-filled day. I love spending time with our ever-growing family, having three grandchildren keeps me on my toes!
